Wintry mix Sunday morning followed by heavy rain and high winds

What a difference a day makes. Sunshine and temps in the 70s today, and winter coats and boots (umbrella too) will likely be necessary tomorrow. NOAA is predicting some nasty weather Sunday into Monday.

A strong frontal system will approach the region Sunday into Sunday night, crossing the area on Monday.  This system will bring a combination of heavy rain with isolated thunderstorms, gusty winds, and minor to locally moderate coastal flooding to the region late Sunday night into Monday. Before then, a light wintry mix is likely Sunday morning through Sunday evening across the interior.

Hazards and Impacts

Rainfall:

A widespread 2 to 3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, is expected tonight through Monday.
The heaviest rain will fall late Sunday Night into Monday afternoon, with 1 ½ to 2 inches possible in a 6 hr period, posing the following threats:
  • An areawide minor urban and poor drainage flooding threat.
  • Potential for localized flash flooding, particularly along the coast during the times of high tide Monday morning into early afternoon.
  • Rapid rises are expected on flash streams in Northeastern New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley, with potential for minor flood impacts.

Although thunderstorms are possible Monday morning into Monday afternoon, they are not expected to be severe at this time.

Winds:

  • E winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts 30 to 40 mph are expected Sunday Night into Monday Morning along the coast.
  • A period of SE/S winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph are possible late Monday Morning into Monday Afternoon across Long Island and Coastal Southeastern CT.
  • These winds may blow down a few tree limbs and cause isolated power outages.
Coastal Flooding:
  • Minor coastal flooding (1 to locally 2 ft of inundation) is expected with the Monday Night and Tuesday morning high tide cycles for vulnerable locales along Western Long Island Sound, Lower NY/NJ Harbor, the Western Great South Bay and Jamaica Bay.
  • Locally moderate coastal flooding is possible along the Western Great South Bay (2 to locally 3 ft inundation), as well as along vulnerable shorefront areas of western LI Sound due to combination of elevated water levels and 3 to 4 ft breaking surf.
  • Along the Atlantic Ocean beachfront, 5 to 8 ft breaking surf and elevated water levels will result in minor to locally moderate beach flooding, with localized dune erosion possible, during the times of high tide Sunday Night into Monday Night.
Mixed Precip:
  • Patchy light freezing rain/drizzle is likely Sunday morning into afternoon across interior Southern CT, Western Passaic, and Lower Hudson Valley, with potential for a glaze to a few hundredths of ice.
  • As a result, locally icy travel conditions are possible across these areas Sunday.
