Grant From Alzheimer’s Foundation of America to Help Protect Residents with Alzheimer’s Disease

Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley Jr. reports that The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has awarded grant funding to the Sheriff’s Department of Putnam County for its Project Lifesaver program.

The Project Lifesaver program utilizes technology and training to help combat wandering, a common and dangerous behavior among individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.  In the event that someone with Alzheimer’s goes missing, the technology and training greatly enhances the Department’s ability to quickly locate the person and return them to safety.  The $5,000 grant awarded by AFA will be used to help the department expand the program and serve more families.

“The Putnam County New York Sheriff’s department performs a critical service in protecting the community, including individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., president and CEO of AFA. “The Project Lifesaver program is an essential resource that has provided families with much-needed peace of mind knowing that there is a service to help locate and protect their loved ones, should they go missing.  AFA is proud to support the expansion of this important project and help make a difference for the families living with Alzheimer’s.”

The funding was awarded through AFA’s Bi-annual Grant Program, which provides grants to non-profit AFA member organizations for programs and services that help further AFA’s mission of delivering optimal care and services to individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses, and to their families and caregivers.

Sheriff Robert L. Langley Jr. notes that “this grant and the Project Lifesaver program will help our Department better protect some of our most vulnerable citizens; we are thankful to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America for this generous gift”.

AFA is able to provide this critical support as a result of the generosity of individual contributions, grants, sponsorships and AFA development activities. To help support these initiatives, visit www.alzfdn.org/support-us/donate/
