Bridgeport Rescue Mission was founded by Jim and Tammy Watson in 1993. They cook meals in local church kitchens and distribute them from the back of their station wagon. The first Great Thanksgiving Project was held in 2008 serving less than 100 turkeys in Bridgeport. Next week the Bridgeport Rescue Mission will distribute 7,000 Turkey and bags of fixings as Bridgeport Rescue Mission expands their work to Stamford, Norwalk, Bridgeport, New Haven and for the first time Ansonia and Waterbury.
The Great Thanksgiving will take place at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater parking lot on November 17 through November 19th from 11:00 am to 2:00 PM. “The Great Thanksgiving Project is one of the most impactful holiday hunger relief efforts in the history of the City of Bridgeport. Thousands of families will experience a hot fresh homemade Thanksgiving celebration because of the project and our community partners and supporters,” said Bridgeport Rescue Mission’s Chief Revenue Officer Kim Fawcett.
The CT 211 help line received three times more calls in 2020 than it did in 2019. COVID through families into economic crisis and are still recovering from the pandemic. The holiday break from school means families need to spend more money on food over the weekend than they normally would since they are not in school to receive free breakfast and lunch. Families who are on a tight budget do not have extra monthly income to afford the turkey and fixings for the traditional Thanksgiving meal. The Great Thanksgiving Project elevates social, economic, and emotional stress associated with the holidays.
Members of the community who would like to help donate a turkey for just $20 can visit here to make a donation.
