John Barile appointed Brookfield Superintendent of Schools

The Board of Education has reached an agreement with John W. Barile to become the new superintendent of schools.

Barile, of Milford, was appointed to become the new superintendent on Wednesday, May 27, during a special board meeting. The school board will hold a welcome reception for him prior to the next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, June 3. He will replace Ralph Iassogna, who served as acting superintendent during the 2014-15 school year.

“I consider it a privilege to work on behalf of the children and citizens of Brookfield, and commit that I will do all that I can to ensure a quality education for every child,” Barile said. “I look forward to collaborating with school personnel, students, parents, town officials, and community members to develop a shared vision.” Barile will remain in his current position as Bethany Superintendent through the end of the 2014-15
school year. Brookfield is a larger school district than Bethany. The former includes two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. In contrast, Bethany, a member of the Amity Regional School District 5, operates one elementary school independently, the prekindergarten through grade six Bethany Community School.

Before assuming leadership in Brookfield, Barile said he will help the Bethany school board establish a transition plan to continue the progress made in the school district.

“This was a very difficult decision to make because I have developed strong relationships in Bethany and am so proud of the progress we made these past few years,” Barile said. “I will be leaving Bethany in very good hands as the board of education, administrative team, and faculty will continue to move the school forward.”

In addition to being highly visible in the school community, Barile said he is committed to continuing the integration of technology into the Brookfield curriculum, establishing open communication, and working with stakeholders on assessing the strategic plan in place and developing goals for the future. Brookfield is getting an experienced public school leader in Barile. In addition to his two and half years as superintendent in Bethany, he has served as principal of three different public schools in Milford, including Joseph A. Foran High School. He led Bethany in enhancing security, adapting its curriculum to the Common Core, providing one to one technology for all students, and developing its strategic plan. Under his leadership, Bethany won an Excellence in Communication award from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) in 2014, and during the same year, Barile was nominated as a Superintendent of the Year candidate for the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents (CAPSS). The district was just recognized for its community service work with local Veterans. He also has served as an adjunct education professor at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU).  Brookfield school board Chairman Scott McCarthy said that the board is delighted with its selection and decision to bring Barile to the community.

“It's been a challenging year for our district and it is now time to look forward and focus on what is most important, our students,” McCarthy said. “Mr. Barile’s passion for education, along with his strong experience as a leader, will help further our goal of offering a high quality educational experience for all. He is an outstanding communicator who is committed to strengthening the relationships among staff, students, and the community at large.”

Barile received his undergraduate, graduate, and sixth-year degrees from SCSU. In 2006, he earned his executive leadership certification through the University of Connecticut. He is currently a doctoral candidate in Organizational Leadership at Northeastern University in Boston.

The school board hired Trumbull-based Cooperative Educational Services (C.E.S.) to coordinate the search for a new superintendent. C.E.S. Executive Search Services consultants held focus groups with community, stakeholders and conducted an online survey to create a leadership profile, based on the characteristics and skills desired in the new superintendent. C.E.S. consultants Dr. Jim Ritchie and Thomas Jokubaitis, both former superintendents in Connecticut, assisted the school board in the review and interview process, leading to Barile’s selection. C.E.S. handled advertising, collected and reviewed résumés, and recommended candidates who met the profile desired by the Brookfield community
members who participated in the process.
