Brookfield Theatre presents the documentary: Why They Kill on June 16, free admission

Brookfield Theatre, in collaboration with The Garner Players, presents the documentary: Why They Kill on Saturday, June 16 beginning at 8:00 pm.

Why do some men, women, and even children assault, batter, rape, mutilate, and murder? It is an age old question – perhaps more relevant now than ever, and one in which this film explores in a way not yet done. There have been and continue to be a myriad of theories regarding violent crime, but few, if any, so comprehensively explain how violent criminals develop, how violent communities are created and transformed, and how violent acts are committed. This feature documentary elucidates how this process unfolds by exploring the stages in the creation of a dangerous, violent criminal according to a theory developed by the renowned criminologist, Lonnie H. Athens, and the strategies that can be taken in preventing and breaking the violentization cycle.

Dr. Athens’ life and work was the subject of the critically acclaimed book by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Richard Rhodes, from which this film is based. The film provides general audiences along with community advocates, policymakers, and stakeholders of educational institutions, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations with new insight into the root causes and prevention of violent crime. It will stimulate discussion among those whose work intersects in the lives of families and children and will help them better consider how they can help short-circuit the violentization process. Most importantly, though, this film underscores the importance of community organizations, including schools, police, courts, families, and neighborhood groups, and others, and the need for these disparate groups to collaborate in a child’s and adolescent’s development.

This film is based on the critically acclaimed book by Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Rhodes.
