Artist selected for mural at Danbury Fair Mall

The Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut and Danbury Fair have chosen the muralist who will reimagine a large bare wall inside the mall with a vision of an environmental future.

The artist, who goes by the single moniker of Kiptoe, was one of three finalists for the project, which is designed to inspire hope and connection through the representation of a sustainable environment and social emergence.

“The completion of this mural increases the accessibility and engagement to art for the people of our region. Art draws people out, and into their community, adding value to the experience of all visitors to the mall,” said Lisa Scails, executive director of the Cultural Alliance, which is managing the project for Danbury Fair. “Macerich has enthusiastically demonstrated how art and business can go together and be mutually beneficial.”

An unveiling reception has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 1. The1,800-square-foot mural inside the Apple Store wing will be designed to view from afar and also to create interactive photo opportunities for mall visitors.

Danbury Fair and the Cultural Alliance worked together on a project invitation to artists. Three muralists were selected to make a final presentation and a committee chose to move forward with Kiptoe’s proposal.

Kiptoe, who was born in New Hampshire and lives in California, said he would “use a limited palette of harmonious colors to bring the entire space together and form a cohesive look and feel for the mall patrons to enjoy and become immersed.” He would also share the creative process with his 700,000 YouTube followers and 260,000 followers on Instagram. Kiptoe will produce a video that documents the creation of the mural and post that as well.

The artist has seven years of experience creating large-scale public murals and art projects for small and large businesses, private clients, and the entertainment industry.

The Cultural Alliance is managing the project, but it would not be happening without Macerich and the Danbury Fair, Scails said, citing the visibility and credibility that the mall can give to the arts.

The Cultural Alliance partnered with Art in Common in Ridgefield to produce four moveable art pieces for Danbury Fair.
