Western Connecticut State University will present painter Colleen McGuire in an online lecture streaming live on Tuesday, Feb. 16, as part of the spring semester Virtual Art Faculty Talks series sponsored by the WCSU Department of Art.
McGuire, an adjunct professor of Studio Art and Art History at WCSU, will discuss her artistic works and creative techniques and philosophy in a Zoom presentation beginning at 6 p.m. The public is invited to register in advance at no charge by accessing the Eventbrite web page for the event here. Registrants will be sent the Zoom invitation link to attend the event online.
A graduate of the WCSU Master of Fine Arts program, McGuire has participated in 17 solo and group exhibitions in Connecticut and New York since 2004. Her works focus on domestic interiors and scenes from ordinary life, featuring careful observation and attention to composition and light in a style reminiscent of early modernist painters such as Edward Hopper and Edouard Vuillard.
“I see my paintings as a visual record of places I encounter throughout my day, with the intention of capturing sensations of light and space,” she observed in her artist statement. “I am drawn to architecture and nature, different times of day, and the seasons. Finding motifs in surroundings that are familiar to me allows me to examine them deeply, with the hope of capturing the experience of seeing through the materiality of paint.”
McGuire primarily paints on wood and Masonite, materials that “allow for reworking, scraping and layering” while “exploring the formal and physical possibilities of oil paint,” she explained. “I am interested in the process of perception and the way paint is transformed on a painted surface through the act of seeing and responding to my environment.”
