Brookfield Craft Center Receives Major Funding for 2018 and Future

The Brookfield Craft Center (BCC) has received more than $140,00 dollars in major foundation gifts for 2018 and beyond, helping to fulfill strategic plans for growth in programs and facility improvements at western Connecticut’s premiere crafting school.  In a year of tight budgets and funding for non-profits, foundation grants provide critical fuel to help expand on the mission of the center, bringing more arts education, artist visibility, and cultural opportunities to the community.

“Ongoing donor support from individuals is an essential part of our success, and our supporters and local community have re-established the Craft Center as a vibrant, growing center for learning and experiencing fine crafts.  With large foundations grants, we are able to implement game-changing initiatives to solidify the future for years to come.” said Howard Lasser, the Craft Center’s Executive Director.

Artist in Residence

The most recent grant from an anonymous foundation is a three-year commitment for $100,000 per year.  “This grant will truly take the Craft Center to a new level of excellence. Part of the funds will go to create a staff position we are calling ‘Artist in Residence / Education Director,’ Lasser said.  “This will enable the Craft Center to accelerate its program growth and expansion of curriculum.”  Today, much of BCC administrative support is provided by part-time and volunteer staff.  The education director will provide important support of education programs, while also offering expertise and learning opportunities from their own craft.

Funds from this multi-year grant will also be used for facilities maintenance of the BCC’s historic properties in the new Brookfield town center as well as funding for the Center’s technology initiative.

Center for Modern Craft

Part of the BCC’s strategic plans focus on establishing a technology-driven studio and learning center, known as the Center for Modern Craft.  “Today’s artists are increasingly combining traditional and modern techniques to create their art.  There are so many new applications in 3D printing, digital photography, editing, design, and more, so our goal is to help bring the art and science of crafting together,” said Monica McInerney, Board President.  “Funding from the anonymous grant will contribute to purchasing the equipment to establish the technology center, and we are so fortunate to have this support to move our offerings to the next level.”

Funding Partners

In addition to the major anonymous grant, the Brookfield Craft Center has received important funding from local and regular grantors, including: Iroquois Gas Transmission Systems, Maximilian E. & Marion O. Hoffman Foundation Inc, the Fairfield County Community Foundation, The Give Back Brands Foundation, The Women’s Club of Danbury/New Fairfield, the State of Connecticut and the Savings Bank of Danbury. Cumulatively, these organizations have contributed more than $40,000 to the Brookfield Craft Center this year.   These critical funds will be used to:

  •          Renovate and improve entry to the historic Mill Building, the home of the Craft Center’s Gallery, Gift Shop and offices,
  •          upgrade administrative technology and computer systems,
  •          improve the Center’s Web site and online class registration system, and
  •          support Youth programs by granting scholarships to those who would otherwise not be able to participate in its classes.

“These funds will allow the Craft Center to create a firm foundation on which to build strong and robust programs, now and in the future,” said Lasser.  “We are grateful for the support of our community, artists, students, and the organizations that share our mission to grow fine craft programs and education.”
