Brookfield Craft Center to host visiting Metalsmith Nicholas K. Downing

Brookfield Craft Center is pleased to present a unique opportunity for blacksmiths and jewelers to combine their creative interests.  This weekend, February 1 & 2, visiting Blacksmith, Jeweler and Custom Metalsmith Nicholas K. Downing will conduct an exclusive class where students will forge their own silver ring.  Using time-honored techniques that reduce metalsmithing to its most elemental, students will first cast their own ingots from grain and then file and polish them into personal beautiful rings.

Downing, a renowned artisan, lives in Maine.  He is a graduate of the university of Southern Maine where he studied Sculpture and Art History.  Downing has taught at the New England School of Metalwork, Snow Farm, Adirondack Fold School and the Maine College of Art, among others.

“An important part of our mission of preserving fine craftsmanship, is bringing new teachers from all over” said Howard Lasser the Craft Center’s Executive Director. “This is just one of what we hope will be many experts in various fields, to visit our campus, possibly even from other countries, and share their skills with the creative community in this area.”.
