Thurs. 8/20—Staged Reading — "The Monroe Doctrine"
by Mark Scharf

What does success mean in America? What does it mean when you don't make it?
It is Memorial Day weekend at Real Monroe's trailer home on Hog Island on Maryland's eastern shore. He attempts to gather his family to meet the wishes of his father, a Korean War veteran and assisted living facility refugee. Expectations and reality collide leaving Real scrambling for solid ground in a shifting landscape of obligations and power. The play can be thought of as an elegy to the lost place of the artist in the world and to twentieth-century versions of masculinity, the ideal now which is ever-changing like a shapeshifter with amnesia.
Cast list to be announced.
