Creativity Connects Brookfield: Meet Lou Okell, President of The Brookfield Theatre for the Arts

Creativity Connects Brookfield

What fuels a vibrant, connected, and creative community? What makes people feel good about living in Brookfield?

When locals share the creativity that they uncover in the nooks and crannies of their community it brings about connectivity and makes us all feel good. Believe it or not, you discover creativity every day as you walk, shop, work, and play in Brookfield.

Creativity connects us.

Meet Lou Okell, president of The Brookfield Theatre for the Arts, an all-volunteer, non-profit community theatre.

What do you love about your community?

Brookfield is a very welcoming community and there are so many people committed to making it a wonderful place to live. The Commission on the Arts has lots of fun events throughout the year and the Brookfield Library also offers many cultural experiences. The volunteer fire department sponsors a lot of family events too. Brookfield is very lucky to have many professional artists offering shows and classes including the Brookfield Craft Center and several music and dance organizations. And of course, lots of great restaurants for before and after shows and rehearsals!

Tell us about an organization in your town that makes you feel good

Brookfield Theatre offers an open door to all ages in the region through its wide range of offerings. The theatre offers the community the opportunity to see great shows at an affordable price, the opportunity to participate in creating and presenting its shows regardless of experience, a free Spotlight program for students ages 6 through 16, open mic Studio B events, and staged readings of new works. The theatre also offers a gallery space for area artists to display their work and a wonderful place to mingle and meet neighbors at events throughout the year.

Where do you go for inspiration and creativity?

Part of the mission of Brookfield Theatre is to be "a brave space that serves as a light in the community" - a place where all are welcome, where it is safe to experiment and try new things, where opinions are invited and active listening is encouraged. For creativity to happen, it is important to feel safe to explore new ideas. The Board of Directors at Brookfield Theatre is committed to providing as many creative opportunities as possible and to collaborate with other organizations in the community to promote the arts.
