Connecticut Water Sustainability in the Spotlight This Week

HARTFORD, CONN. – In conjunction with World Water Day (March 22), water advocates from across Connecticut are focused on raising awareness and encouraging continued action toward waterway sustainability and quality standards by applying the recommendations and task lists of the State Water Plan passed by the CT General Assembly in June 2019.

This year's World Water Day theme is valuing water, which is about much more than its price. Water has enormous and complex value for our households, food, culture, health, education, economics and the integrity of our natural environment. If we overlook any of these values, we risk mismanaging this finite, irreplaceable resource.

Connecticut’s first State Water Plan, developed over several years by a broad group of stakeholders, takes into account these many human needs as well as ecological considerations like the need to keep enough flowing water in rivers and streams to sustain fish populations. The event also comes just days after the CGA Environment Committee’s Joint Resolution HJ 53 proposing the adoption of the Long Island Sound Blue Plan, which catalogs the many natural resources and traditional human uses of the Sound’s waters, and offers guidance to balance and protect them.

With regard to the occasion and related initiatives, CT State Senator Tony Hwang remarked, “On World Water Day, I am reminded about all the wonderful ways that Connecticut’s coastline and rivers contribute to life here in the Constitution state. Representing shoreline towns, I am especially familiar with the importance of protecting this incredible natural resource and have served as a staunch advocate for measures to sustain and preserve Long Island Sound and all Connecticut waterways. We have made great strides in recent years to take necessary legislative action to enforce proper environmental protections for both people and wildlife to enjoy for generations to come.”
