Brewster Theater Company Presents 1955 Tony Winner “The Pajama Game”

Timeless musical comedy staged at Drew UM

What happens when the new superintendent of the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory falls for the company’s union rep? Come find out the end result of this labor vs. management, battle of the sexes, love story when Brewster Theater Company stages this comedic musical at Drew United Methodist Church.

Romance is blossoming at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, when the handsome new superintendent, Sid Sorokin, finds himself attracted to union rep, “Babe” Williams. However, when Sleep-Tite employees are refused a seven-and-a-half cent raise, the pair find themselves on either side of the union protest that results. “The Pajama Game” portrays the ups and downs of romance with the added heat of politics combined with musical numbers and comedy. (For those Bob Fosse fans out there, the original production was his debut as a Broadway choreographer and earned him his first Tony Award for Best Choreography.)

“I played Prez in ‘The Pajama Game’ during my Freshman year in high school so the show has always been a favorite of mine,” Director Christopher Gladysz of Brewster and New York City said. “How can you not love a show with songs like ‘Hey There,’ ‘Steam Heat’ and ‘Hernando’s Hideaway?’ For years, I’ve wanted to direct a production of the show. And, this was my lucky year,”

Stacy Dumont of Patterson is co-producing the show with Judy Brewster of Brewster and is a co-founder of The Brewster Theater Company. She noted, “When we sat to choose this year’s season, we knew that we wanted to balance last summer’s modern, dark comedy of ‘Urinetown’ with a lighter, well-known classic. ‘The Pajama Game’ fit the bill.”

The cast includes Amanda Booth, Judy Brewster, Emma Burke-Covitz, Florence Cuomo, Sarah Daleo, Gabriella DeCicco, Janette Devine, Stacy Dumont, Tommy Fraessel, Regina Furphy, Matt Holic, Brandy Mae Hughes, Jenna Isabella, Barbara Kessler, Kevin McCarthy, Carolyn McCarthy, Gabriel Montanaro, Robin O’Leary, John Palacio, Phil Pineau, Mario Riccobon, Pat Sebastian, Ken Shelby, Gina Stanton, Aranka Vitarius, Curtis Watkins and Steve Zerilli. Musical direction is by Melissa Jones of Brewster. Stage manager for the production is Samantha Steere of Brewster.
