NY State Board of Regents Cancels Exams Scheduled For June

The New York state Board of Regents announced this morning that it is canceling this year’s Regents exams due to current Covid-19 pandemic.

In a press release earlier this morning, Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa announced, “The COVID-19 pandemic has put a tremendous burden on many New Yorkers and our schools and children are no exception,” Rosa said. “The regulations passed by the Board today will allow schools, students and professionals much-needed flexibility while they adapt to this rapidly evolving situation.”

The federal government has already provided New York with a one-year waiver from provisions of the Every Student Succeeds Act. The NY State Education Department said the commissioner will not conduct a review of school and district performance this year using the 2019-2020 school year data.

With New York schools closed through at least April 15, the 180-day operation requirement had already been waived. The rest of the school year in several states has already been cancelled and this morning Governor Cuomo announced he is keeping schools in NY State closed until April 29th.
