Thanksgiving Safety Tips from Servpro of Servpro of Putnam and NWSE Dutchess County

As Thanksgiving approaches and we prepare for a feast, I wanted to provide you with some safety tips when planning your holiday meal.

  1. Make sure you have smoke/Carbon monoxide detectors installed.
  2. Start with a clean oven.
  3. Remove fire hazards. Remove anything near the stove that could catch fire, oven mitts, towels, wooden utensils, plastic bags and loose clothing.
  4. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
  5. Take extra precautions with a turkey fryer. Turkey fryers increase your risk of burn and fire hazards. Be sure the oil used to fry the turkey is the right temperature and ALWAYS fry outside in a well-ventilated area.
  6. Avoid toxic air and be sure to have vents running in the kitchen while cooking and open windows and doors for a few minutes each hour to circulate fresh air.
  7. Be prepared in case of a fire. In case of fire on stove, shut stove off, cover the fire or burning pan with a lid, and use the fire extinguisher. DO NOT USE salt, flour or water to try to put out the fire because these substances could cause a stove fire flare up. For a fire in the oven, turn oven off and leave door closed. Call 911 to report a fire and leave the home.
  8. Be careful with candles. If you are decorating your table for the holiday please be sure not to leave an open flame unattended.
