The Brewster Garden Club was founded in 1929, the Carmel Garden Club was founded in 1952 and we consolidated into one Club in 1989. We have approximately 45 members and we meet the second Tuesday of every month except August and January at Cornerstone Park 1 Fair Street in Carmel.
To become a member you must attend 3 meetings and pay yearly dues and then be voted into the the Garden Club.
We are part of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State 9th District (fgcnys.com).
The Garden Club’s mission is to educate, which we do when we have our Flower show. Our next Flower show will be in September 2019.
Every year the Garden club awards a scholarship to a high school student at Brewster High School and Carmel High school who will be studying a field related to horticulture or environmental sciences.
The garden club members are involved in many civic programs in Brewster and Carmel. We plant, water and maintain the gardens at the library, honor roll, the cemetery and Blue Star Memorial at the train station in Brewster; buy and maintain the hanging baskets in Carmel, plant and maintain plants at Cornerstone Park, several other plantings in Carmel as well as the Statute of Sybil Luddington in Carmel Hamlet.
On October 13, at 10 a.m. we are dedicating a Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker in front of the Dave Bruen County Building, Main Street, Carmel. This is a tribute to all men and women who had served, are serving or would serve in the Armed Forces of the United States. This is a special way garden clubs honor our Armed Forces.
Our members are involved in many projects from volunteering in schools to setting up a garden therapy program, making wreaths at Christmas for Veterans, decorating the Walter Brewster House and decorating a Christmas Tree at the Putnam Hospital.
We also enjoy trips to view gardens and usually have a program relating to gardening at our monthly meeting.
