Prevention Council of Putnam Attends CADCA

Representatives from Putnam County, NY recently returned from the Washington, D.C. area where they joined more than 3,000 substance abuse prevention specialists and advocates from throughout the country for Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America's (CADCA) 29th Annual National Leadership Forum. The Forum is a four-day event packed with opportunities to learn the latest strategies to address substance abuse and hear from nationally-known prevention experts, federal administrators, and concerned policymakers.

Kristin McConnell, Executive Director of the Prevention Council of Putnam and Co-Chair of the Putnam CTC Coalition, and Marie O’Connor, Project Coordinator, Partnership For Success/CTC Coordinator attended the National Leadership Forum representing our community.

“We were so excited to be able to spend several days with other coalitions from across the nation, networking, learning new information and honing our prevention skills so we help make our community a safer place, and share what we’ve learned with our Communities That Care Coalitions,” stated Marie O’Connor, Project Coordinator, Partnership For Success/CTC Coordinator. “It was inspiring to be in the company of over 300 young people, who are impassioned to learn and better their communities. Year after the year, the CADCA Forum experience allows us to return re-energized, more knowledgeable and enthused to return home and implement strategies for a safe, healthy and drug-free Putnam County.”

CADCA’s Forum covered a wide range of topics ranging from the marijuana legislation, and tobacco cessation to the opioid epidemic and underage drinking and e-cigarettes. Members of the Putnam Communities That Care coalition also met with U.S. representatives and senators at the CADCA Forum’s Capitol Hill Day event.

CADCA’s National Leadership Forum, the nation’s largest training conference for community prevention leaders, treatment professionals and researchers and SAMHSA’s 15th Prevention Day, occurred at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center Feb. 4-7, 2019.
