Maloney Demands Trump Keeps Hands Off West Point Funding, Stop Diverting Military Funds for Border Wall

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) demanded President Trump immediately reverse his Administration’s plan to divert $3.6 billion in military construction projects - including $160 million in funds for the United States Military Academy at West Point, located in his Congressional district – to build a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I thought Mexico was paying for the wall – not our future military leaders. The important projects he’s putting at risk are far more important than his misguided vanity project. I won’t stand by as he robs our next generation of leaders and military families of opportunity and improvements to their education,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney.

In March, Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan confirmed that he sent a list of vulnerable military construction projects to Congress. These projects included funding that has been appropriated, but not contracted for military construction projects across the country. Four projects at West Point were on the list, including a state-of-the-art cyber and engineering center.

This week, Department of Defense Secretary Mark Esper confirmed 127 military construction projects domestically and internationally would be robbed of critically needed funds, including projects at West Point. This move comes after the President declared a national emergency in February, diverting billions of dollars from previously appropriated funds to build a wall on the southern border.
