Maloney Statement on Death of West Point Cadet

October 23, 2019, Today, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18), released the following statement after the United States Military Academy at West Point announced the death of West Point Cadet Kade Kurita.

“Randy and I join the West Point community and Cadet Kade Kurita’s family as they grieve their tragic loss. This is truly heartbreaking news, and the prayers of the Hudson Valley are with his family and friends today.

“I thank the West Point police, our local and state law enforcement, the Coast Guard, CSX railroad police, and community members across the Hudson Valley for their extensive coordinated efforts during the search.

“I will continue to monitor this situation as we learn more, and again offer my condolences to the Kurita family.”

Cadet Kurita, a member of the Class of 2021, had been unaccounted for since about 5:30 p.m. on Friday when he failed to report for a scheduled military skills competition on the academy grounds. The cadet's rifle also was reported missing, but officials did not believe he had any ammunition in his possession. The military said there was no indication the cadet posed a threat to the public, but feared he could be a danger to himself.

The discovery Tuesday concluded an extensive series of searches conducted by West Point Military Police, New York State Police, Coast Guard, CSX railroad police, local police and the 23rd Military Police Company from Fort Drum, N.Y., the academy said in a news release.

Cadet Kurdita went missing last Friday and the military brought in 150 troops from Fort Drum, NY to aid in the search for the cadet
