Cuomo Alludes to Forced Medicaid Costs on Taxpayers & Ignores Bail Reform Crisis

A statement from Assemblyman Kevin Byrne (R,C,Ref-Mahopac)

“Gov. Cuomo alluded to forcing county governments to pay a larger share of Medicaid costs at this year’s State of the State. Let me be crystal clear, forcing more Medicaid costs on local property taxpayers is not a viable solution to our state’s budget deficit and would simply equate to yet another property tax hike on hardworking New Yorkers. At a time when people continue flee our state, we need to make sure our government offers better ideas to spur economic opportunity and growth, not stunt it.

“The governor also offered up a litany of more spending proposals with no realistic mechanism to fund them- other than perhaps attempting to legalize marijuana. We simply cannot continue down the path of more big government taxes and spending.

“I also found it deeply troubling that while other legislative leaders have spoken out in regards to bail reform, the governor did not once mention the need to revisit this recently implemented disaster. Our state government must act to repeal, or at least amend these changes, so that judges can once again have discretion to issue bail when someone is considered a flight risk or danger to the public safety.”
