Maloney urges NY'ers to complete their Census forms.

In celebration of the once-a-decade Census Day, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) is encouraging Hudson Valley residents to respond to the 2020 Census today, either online or by phone.

“It is critical we get as big a response to the 2020 Census as we can from the Hudson Valley. The Census determines our share of federal funds, and will help grow our economy, expand access to resources, and keep our schools strong here in New York,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. “As we celebrate the once-in-a-decade Census Day, I encourage everyone to take the time to fill out the Census online with your family and help shape the Hudson Valley.”

Most households in New York should have already received official Census Bureau mail to their homes, which includes a unique Census I.D. for completing the Census online. It also includes information on responding by phone or mail.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, filling out the Census online or by phone is the best method to respond and get counted. This will help proactively limit door-to-door interaction later this year with local census-takers in New York. More information on new Census survey methods can be found on the Census Bureau website: www.2020census.gov.

More Information on the 2020 Census

The U.S. Constitution requires the U.S. Census Bureau to count the number of people living in America once a decade. The federal government and communities across America rely on census statistics for accurate congressional representation and districting, determining where to build new schools, businesses and hospitals, and allocating federal grant funds and loans to communities in need.

Many communities throughout New York’s Hudson Valley, including the towns of Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Fishkill, Tuxedo, Wappinger, Wallkill and Warwick, were considered “Hard to Count” regions in the 2010 census, with several census tracts returning only half of mailed census questionnaires. This resulted in possible undercounting in the region.

The U.S. Census Bureau is the federal government’s largest statistical agency, and is dedicated to providing current facts and figures about America’s people, places and economy. Federal law protects the confidentiality of all individual responses the Census Bureau collects.
