Maloney Announces Nearly $20 Million Grant for Metro-North Railroad Safety Improvements

Today, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) announced that the Metro-North Railroad (MNR), in conjunction with the New York State Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), was awarded a $19,728,000 grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). The grant was awarded under the Commuter Authority Rail Safety Improvement (CARSI) Grants Program. The Metro-North Railroad is one of only five recipients of the award.

This grant will support safety improvements to nine crossings along the MNR Harlem Line in Westchester, Dutchess and Putnam Counties.

“Working families, small businesses and communities throughout the Hudson Valley rely on Metro-North to get folks where they’re going. But safety must always be our first priority and we’ve seen firsthand what happens if we don’t make needed investments in our infrastructure. That’s why it’s critical that we upgrade our rail crossings to prevent dangerous incidents and keep millions of New Yorkers safe,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. “I am proud to announce that Metro-North has received this grant to make the lines safer for passengers, motorists and pedestrians, and will continue fighting for safe, quality transportation options for New Yorkers throughout the Hudson Valley.”

This project will upgrade or replace existing at-grade crossing warning systems and reconstruct the existing railroad crossings. Representative Maloney has been a long-time champion of legislation to improve grade crossings across New York, and has introduced legislation to help state and local governments access grants to repair and relocate crossings, and allow commuter and freight rail systems to apply for loans and loan guarantees to invest in positive train control systems.
