Putnam County Executive-Elect Kevin Byrne announced the appointment of James “Jim” Burpoe as Deputy County Executive for the incoming Byrne Administration. Burpoe has an extensive background in both the public and private sectors, leading government and businesses in implementing cost-savings and efficiency measures. Burpoe currently serves as the Commissioner of General Services for Orange County where he has streamlined government operations, saving taxpayers millions of dollars annually while enhancing processes and services throughout the county. He also spearheaded the consolidation of Orange County’s Information Technology and Purchasing Departments, leading to additional efficiencies and better enabling the government to serve the people. In addition to his years of service in county government, his background includes building and managing his own multi-million dollar retail technology start-up company, as well as his time in public service as a law enforcement officer and U.S. Army veteran. As Putnam’s new Deputy County Executive, Burpoe will be instrumental in implementing a more efficient, streamlined and transparent government.

Burpoe’s appointment was lauded by his former employer, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus: “I want to congratulate Jim on his new position and wish him the best of luck.” said Neuhaus, “Jim’s diverse experience in both the public and private sector and knowledge of County government operations will make him an asset to County Executive Byrne’s team and the residents of Putnam County.”
Stephen J. Acquario, Executive Director of the New York State Association of Counties also praised the appointment. “With fourteen years of experience in county government, James Burpoe has the knowledge and expertise needed to support the newly elected Putnam County Executive, Kevin Byrne.” Acquario said “As the Commissioner of General Services for Orange County, Mr. Burpoe provided critical operational management to two county executives, most recently serving County Executive Steve Neuhaus. He is a respected expert in county purchasing, policy, and administration. Jim’s long and distinguished public service to the people of Orange County will enable him to hit the ground running on day one for the residents of Putnam County.”
County Executive-Elect Byrne continues to focus on selecting candidates and preparing initiatives during his transition. His transition team has devoted over 100 hours to reviewing contracts, meeting with current department heads, evaluating existing programs in Putnam County, reviewing resumes, and more.
