Dogs Allowed off Leash in Gedney Park during the Cold Weather Months

Something to Wag Your Tails About!

In April 2020, the Town Board voted to require dogs within any area of Gedney Park to be on a leash at all times. This decision was made due to greatly increased trail usage during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Board’s desire to offer safe recreational opportunities for all New Castle families at a time when ballfields and playgrounds were closed.

On the recommendation of the Recreation Commission, the Town Board voted yesterday to lift the dog leash mandate in Gedney Park between November 18, 2020 to March 15, 2021, provided the dog is under visual and voice control. This decision was made due to decreased trail usage during the cold weather months.

We will be monitoring the situation, and may reverse this decision if needed. Either way, the Recreation Commission and the Town Board will reconsider the leash requirements in Gedney Park prior March 2021.
