How Rowayton Got Its Name

According to the Darien Historical Society, Five Mile River was bought from Piamikin, the chief of the Roatons. Roaton, means "the creek almost dry at low tide. "

Anyone, who has paddle boarded or kayaked on Five Mile River knows this can be the case.

That sale included the Tokeneke section of Darien.  The new  owners, in the twentieth century chose the name of the Norwalk tribe for their real estate development.  And thus, Rowayton was born.
