Greenwich Pen Women and the Perrot Memorial Library Discussion Series with Sanora Babb

The Greenwich Pen Women and the Perrot Memorial Library will continue its new, co-sponsored book discussion series on Monday, May 8, from 7 to 8:30 pm, in the Library’s Radcliffe Program Room. The group will explore the evocative writing of Sanora Babb with a discussion of her memoir An Owl on Every Post, facilitated by Greenwich Pen Woman Joanne Dearcopp, who knew Ms. Babb.

“An unsung masterpiece—I was completely blown away. It offers an unforgettable picture of life as seen through the eyes of a sensitive, courageous young girl growing up on the drought-ravaged Great Plains. Her ageless story deserves a permanent place in our nation’s literature.”—Arnold Rampersad

Sanora Babb learned to read from newspapers on the dirt walls of the family’s dugout on a 320-acre Colorado homestead where her family lived from 1913 to 1918. She went on to write short stories, journalism, poems, and books including the classic Whose Names Are Unknown, which was featured on the Ken Burns documentary “The Dust Bowl.” Many consider this novel a rival to The Grapes of Wrath. Babb’s hardscrabble years are in sharp contrast to her later life when she was married to the Oscar-winning cinematographer James Wong Howe. There was the glamour of old Hollywood, international travel, and time on locations with film stars such as Paul Newman and Sean Connery.
