Abilis 1st Annual Golf Scramble Raises $20,000 for Innovative Sound Therapy Program

Abilis, the non-profit organization that provides services and support to more than 700 individuals with special needs and their families, held its first annual Sound Therapy Golf Scrambleon June 12, 2019,at the Griffith E. Harris Golf Course in Greenwich, Connecticut. More than 100 golfers participated in the event, which began with a shot-gun start and raised more than $20,000 to support Abilis’ Sound Therapy program.

 

The Abilis Sound Therapy program provides a calming environment for individuals with special needs to focus on the senses, utilizing calming sounds, specialized scents and vibrations. The benefits of sound therapy include relaxation techniques to help support physical and emotional health well-being by reducing stress and increasing positive communications. The Abilis program participants after each session have reported more clarity, calmness and regulated emotions.

The Abilis Golf Scramble event organizer was created by Pio Bruzzese, who owns NEMO Tile in Stamford, Connecticut. He decided to organize and sponsor the golf event after seeing the positive effects that Sound Therapy had on his son Vincent, age 22, who is in the Abilis community-based day program in Greenwich and volunteers in the community at the YMCA with the support of Abilis staff. Therapies are not funded after the age of 21 and Pio wanted to find a way to support this beneficial program for his son and others.
