Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Laura + Rachel Jewelry!

Three questions with Laura Bronkesh, founder of Laura + Rachel Jewelry.

Why did you start your business?

Ever since I was a little girl, I had a knack for fashion. My Mom-mom loved jewelry and would bring me along to jewelry boutiques and antique shops, always on the hunt for something special. She collected jewelry like some people collect art, and as her collection grew, so did my passion for beautifully designed pieces. From diamonds to color stones to fashion baubles, I developed an appreciation and interest in all types of jewelry.

I began working in Manhattan's diamond district in my twenties, learning the business and expanding on my fine jewelry education. When friends and family reached out for advice on engagement rings, studs, tennis necklaces & wedding bands, I realized there was a gap in the market that I could help fill. My business evolved organically through word of mouth and repeat customers. Engagement ring customers turned into push presents, anniversaries, and birthdays.

What is your best-selling product/service?

After engagement rings and wedding bands, fashion jewelry is my best seller. With multiple ear piercings, necklaces, and bangles/bracelets, customers can layer items and create their unique style. I love helping people build their looks!

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

I enjoy intimate events where I connect and meet people who are friends of friends.
