The Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works will begin the annual Leaf Collection Program on November 6, 2023, in only Section 3, and all other sections to begin on November 13, 2023. Weather permitting, leaves will be collected Monday to Saturday, with two leaf collections per numeric section. The program is expected to finish in mid-December.
Residents are asked to pile leaves near the street but off the road and sidewalks, as this can pose a safety hazard for pedestrians and bicyclists and can negatively impact stormwater drainage. This program is offered to half-acre or less residential properties (building zone R-20) on public roads.
There will be no leaf collection on the day prior to Veterans Day, November 10, 2023, Veterans Day, November 11, 2023, Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2023, and the day after Thanksgiving, November 25, 2023. Timing and schedule for leaf pickup may be adjusted and subject to change due to unforeseen events, including adverse weather conditions. Leaf Collection Guidelines for Residents
- Place leaves as close to the edge of the street as possible without placing leaves in the road, sidewalk, catch basins or open channels.
- Rake leaves into neat piles or place leaves into biodegradable bags. Leaves in plastic bags will not be collected.
- Make sure there are no branches, sticks, or garden refuse in leaf piles or bagged leaves.
- Rake early and frequently to be prepared for leaf pickup.
- As per the State of Connecticut, General Statutes, Chapter 368m, Sec. 19a-335, Nuisances on Highways, residents must remove all residual leaf piles after the second leaf collection.
Alternative Leaf Options
- Drop off leaves at Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility (permit required).
- Mulch leaves and leave them in place. Mulching leaves can improve lawns and reduce the environmental footprint associated with collection, hauling, and composting elsewhere. More information on this approach: http://www.leleny.org/p/homeowners.html.

- Sections 9, 10, 11 Cos Cob
- Section 13 Boro (Central Greenwich)

On average, the Town removes more than 30,000 cubic yards of leaves each year, which are sent to a Connecticut farm to be composted.
