The Rotary Club of Greenwich Grants the Greenwich United Way Reading Champions Program

On Wednesday, March 14th, David Rabin, CEO of Greenwich United Way was presented with a check of $5,000 at the Rotary Club of Greenwich luncheon which took place at the Riverside Yacht Club. The grant will benefit the Greenwich United Way flagship program, Reading Champions. The donation provides funding for tutor supplies, books and year-end awards recognizing the children in the program.

"The thrust of the Greenwich Rotary Club has always been literacy. For that reason, we are very happy and proud to support and fund Reading Champions. The program has been such a positive and successful endeavor in the Greenwich community utilizing the efforts of so many dedicated volunteers. To collaborate with the Greenwich United Way is key to keeping our non-profits vital in serving the needs of our town" said Sally Parris, President of the Rotary Club of Greenwich.

More About Reading Champions
Greenwich United Way Reading Champions, in partnership with the Greenwich Public Schools, is a reading literacy program pairing Greenwich youth with trained community volunteers in an effort to build fluency skills during the school year. Since 2008, Reading Champions volunteers have assisted over 3,000 children in achieving individual reading goals in fluency. Over 100 volunteer tutors contribute an average of 4000+ volunteer hours each year. By enabling students to obtain immediate feedback and receive one-on-one personal attention, the program has been a resounding and proven success. In conjunction with the Greenwich Public School reading curriculum, Reading Champions contributes to the development and growth of students' reading fluency. Currently, Greenwich United Way Reading Champions serves all 11 elementary schools in Greenwich and the Byram Archibald Neighborhood Center (BANC), Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich (BGCG), and the YWCA of Greenwich. Volunteer tutors are trained, no teaching experience is needed, and tutoring opportunities are always available.
