Norwalk Mentor Program seeks 100 new mentors for youth in 2019-2020 school year

The Human Services Council will be holding a press conference on Wednesday, August 7 at 10:00 a.m. at their offices located at One Park Street in Norwalk, CT. Our mission for this press conference is to raise awareness of the Norwalk Mentor Program and recruit at least 100 new mentors for the upcoming academic year.

We will be joined by Mayor of Norwalk, Harry Rilling, Superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools, Dr. Stephen Adamowski, Norwalk Chief of Police Tom Kulhawik, Dr. Susan Weinberger, “Dr. Mentor,” founder of the Norwalk Mentor Program, Assistant Vice President and Business Development Officer of First County Bank Steven Ferguson and many others. Our event will showcase some of our mentor/mentee success stories and offer attendees the opportunity to network with key constituents in the community and help grow the Norwalk Mentor Program so we may provide more Norwalk students with an adult mentor.

The first school-based mentoring program in the country, the Norwalk Mentor Program matches adult mentors to students in the Norwalk Public Schools.  The pair meets for one hour a week, at school, to share fun activities and conversation.  The mentor teaches the student social skills, encourages positive choices, promotes high self-esteem, supports academic achievement and introduces the mentee to new ideas. The mentor serves as a role model and becomes a special, supportive adult in that young person’s life; sometimes the only stable adult role model for the child.  For more information on this event, please contact Kim Killoy, Director of Development & Communications at 203.849.1111 X3023 or kkilloy@hscct.org
