Andy Warhol: A lecture sponsored by Greenwich Art Society and U.S. Trust

On the occasion of the exhibit Andy Warhol – From A to B and Back Again at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Greenwich Art Society and U.S. Trust will present a conversation about the life and work of Andy Warhol on Thursday, November 29 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Greenwich Public Library’s Meeting Room (2ndfloor). Drew Watson, Art Services Specialist at U.S. Trust, and Aliza Shvarts, the Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art, will discuss the artist’s legacy and enduring influence.

Andy Warhol – From A to B and Back Again at the Whitney Museum (November 12, 2018–March 31, 2019), the first Warhol retrospective organized by a U.S. institution since 1989, reconsiders the work of one of the most inventive, influential, and important American artists. Organized over several floors of the museum, the retrospective of more than 350 works covers a range of the artist’s innovations as a commercial illustrator, filmmaker, portraitist, writer, and publisher.

Building on a wealth of new materials, research and scholarship that has emerged since the artist’s untimely death in 1987, the exhibition reveals new complexities about the Warhol we think we know, and introduces a Warhol for the 21st century. The Whitney’s exhibition considers the significance of his later lesser-known work as well as his success in the art market.

The conversation will draw on the expertise of an art market specialist and an artist and teacher. Drew Watson is Vice President, Art Services Specialist at U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management. In addition to advising art collectors and institutions, he has lectured widely on the current state of the art market and collecting contemporary art. Aliza Shvarts is an artist, writer, and scholar whose work explores performance, race, gender, and class. She is currently the Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Founded in 1912, the Greenwich Art Society is the oldest visual arts organization in Greenwich, Connecticut. The society’s Studio School offers classes by professional artists, providing traditional and foundational visual arts education for children and adults.
