Greenwich Historical Society Plein Air Painting Workshop on Nov. 12

Participants will create paintings in the style of the American Impressionists

Known for his lush Impressionist canvases, master painter and instructor Dimitri Wright, whose works are housed in hundreds of private and museum collections, will offer a unique opportunity to enter the world of John Henry Twachtman and  other major figures in American Impressionism at a plein air painting workshop on the historic campus of the Greenwich Historical Society on November 12, from 10am – 3pm.

InRetracing Twachtman’s Footsteps: Painting en Plein Air in Cos Cob,” Wright will provide individualized training and feedback to enable participants to create their own paintings in the Impressionist style.

“I look forward to sharing the classical training I received from my studies and through mentors steeped in American Impressionism,” says Wright. “Students will have the opportunity to actively engage in the technique and practice of Impressionism and relive the experience of the first Impressionist artists, including Twachtman, Childe Hassam and J. Alden Weir, who were inspired by the grounds of the Historical Society, once the site of the first Impressionist art colony in America in the late 19th century.”

The program will open with a guided tour of the Greenwich Historical Society’s current exhibition “Life and Art: The Greenwich Paintings of John Henry Twachtman led by Greenwich Historical Society Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Maggie Dimock. Life and Art, on view through January 22, 2023, presents a unique view into the time when Twachtman lived and painted in Greenwich and earned a reputation as the most original of the leading American Impressionists.
