Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich Announces 2020 Scholarship Recipients

The Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich (HATG) is pleased to announce its 2020 scholarship recipients. The $1,000 scholarships, funded by HATG, were awarded to eight first-year college students determined by the Greenwich Scholarship Association, and eight students currently enrolled in college. All sixteen recipients are residents of one of the Greenwich Housing Developments or a participant in the Section 8 Program.

Through the Greenwich Scholarship Association, the eight students who graduated from Greenwich High School in June are Erica Adjei, June Akpata, Carolina Alicea, Samantha Alvarado, Joana Cabrera, Alberto Figueroa, Mariana Garcia, and Alyson Payan.

For the eight students currently enrolled in college, additional scholarship criteria included a GPA of 2.5 or higher and submission of a 500-word essay on the topic of how society has needed to make changes due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and specifically the adjustments they have made to a "new normal."

The eight recipients are as follows: Eternity Armenteros, Jocelyn Benitez, Lumi Bici, Mia Giselle Binuya, Fjolla Gashi, Hachton Laforest, Claudia Leiva, and Kelly Anne Serdena. All award money is sent directly to the schools.

"Congratulations to each of our scholarship recipients on behalf of myself, the Board of Commissioners, and everyone from the Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich. We are happy to support these students in their higher education pursuits," said Anthony L. Johnson, Executive Director. "Part of our mission is to provide our residents with access to opportunities. We don't just say our children's futures are important – we do something about it. We are proud to provide our residents with safe, decent, and affordable housing and services that foster opportunities for success, such as furthering their educational goals."

About The Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich

The Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich is committed to
providing affordable housing and improving the quality of life for low
and moderate-income families by guaranteeing safe, quality housing.
Initially created in 1946 with the mission of providing housing to
returning war veterans. As the veterans stabilized and adjusted to
returning home, they moved forward with their lives and out of public
housing. Today the Housing Authority owns and manages 13 residential
complexes, accommodating senior citizens, families, and disabled
persons in 857 apartments and Parsonage Cottage, 40-bed
assisted/independent living facility for seniors. Additionally, the
Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich administers 348 Section 8
vouchers, a federally funded program, providing housing throughout the
community by subsidizing the tenant’s rent with private landlords. The
family pays 30% of the family’s total income toward the market rent,
with the program absorbing the difference. HATG also has been
fortunate to have the ability to provide lower than market rate
housing to working families that would not be able to reside in
Greenwich if not for these apartments.

The mission of the Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich is now
more broadly defined than the conventional notion of brick and mortar
as the primary focus. They eagerly encourage a sense of community,
purpose, and personal growth, helping residents to shape their lives
productively. Working in unique collaborative partnerships that tap a
multitude of resources within the Greenwich community and from state
and federal organizations, the Housing Authority has implemented a
broad-based group of supportive services to strengthen family life,
foster stable home environments, drug-free living, independence and
self-sufficiency. Many of these initiatives are through the auspices
of local agencies and organizations, helping to make Greenwich a
thriving community for everyone.
