Creativity Connects Greenwich: Meet Corinne Flax, Bruce Museum educator, community advocate

Creativity Connects Greenwich

What fuels a vibrant, connected and creative community? What makes people feel good about living in Greenwich?

When locals share the creativity that they uncover in the nooks and crannies of their community it brings about connectivity and makes us all feel good. Believe it or not, you discover creativity every day as you walk, shop, work, and play in Greenwich?

Creativity connects us.

Meet Corinne Flax, Bruce Museum educator, community advocate, lover of all things outdoors, aspiring yogi, and lifelong Nutmegger.

Is there a person or organization using creativity to provoke change in Greenwich?

For me, the organization and person in Greenwich that I associate most with creativity and change is the Greenwich Arts Council and its executive director Tatiana More. The Council’s mission is to promote the visual, performing, and literary arts in our community by encouraging artists and building audiences. Tatiana brings cutting-edge experiences and thought-provoking artwork to the public forefront, whether by bringing performing arts into public schools, providing upcoming artists with exhibition space or hosting dynamic conversations on the nature of art -- often, I’m pleased to say, in partnership with the Bruce Museum.

Any place in town where you go for inspiration and creativity?

Outdoor spaces, especially those where land and sea meet, have always been a source of inspiration for me. Bruce Park, with its rocky outcroppings, wide views of Indian Harbor, large population of sea and shorebirds, arboretum of native and decorative trees and rolling paths and lawns, is where I go in Greenwich when I am seeking inspiration and creativity. My favorite spot in the park is about to get even better, as the Davis Avenue bridge is being refreshed and will soon be an even more lovely place to stop and enjoy the view.

Finish this sentence: When I think of creativity in town I think of...

I think of the Greenwich Public School System and their Arts & Music Program Coordinator, Laura Newell. As Manager of School and Community Partnerships at the Bruce Museum, I have had the privilege of working closely with the Greenwich Public Schools, and it is incredible how many amazing teachers, administrators, and involved parents I have met. The dedication of these educators and volunteers has created a system that values and celebrates creativity. While there are too many incredible people in this system to name individually, Laura deserves an individual shout-out, as she leads the way in advocating for creativity in and outside of the classroom, both for students and teachers.
