Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Bistro V!

Four questions with Marc Penvenne, founder of Bistro V.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business on Greenwich Avenue after relocating to Greenwich with my family from Saint Barts in the early '90s. We wanted to bring something to town that was unique, healthy, and different, a little piece of Brittany in France where I am originally from. After years of owning and operating Meli-Melo, we purchased Versailles from the second owners and transformed the restaurant into Bistro V - a casual style bistro that is open all day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I kept the Versailles brand along with the original patisserie in Greenwich and we still offer freshly made viennoiseries, pastries, and cakes from the nearby bakery at the restaurant [Bistro V].

What is your best-selling product/service?

We have a great beverage program, the cocktails and wine list are very popular! We've modified our menu to reflect international cuisine with a French twist so menu items are diverse and there is something for everyone. I really love our seafood dishes! I also hear that we have the best onion soup and housemade foie gras.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

My staff lives in Fairfield and Westchester County. I also work with local businesses to help me with marketing and we have an art program at both restaurants to support local artists. We provide a long list of local organizations with gift cards to help with their fundraising we also have partnered with organizations like Breast Cancer Alliance and Kids Helping Kids to raise awareness and fund through special menu items. I really think it's important to support our local businesses.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

During the pandemic, we had to do a lot of "reimagining". Outdoor dining saved us and eventually, we brought back live music and our bottomless drink specials during weekend brunch to give customers incentives to dine with us again. We recently published new summer menus on our website and we're working to attract more large parties and private events in our dining room. Other than working to provide quality food and service we're trying to make the experience at Bistro V more fun and entertaining.

Marc would like to nominate his awesome marketing manager to be featured next - Sarah from Hybrid Media!
