Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Counterspace!

Four questions with Brett Collins, founder, and Chief Digital Officer of Counterspace.

Why did you start your business?

I have always had a deep-rooted desire to solve problems using creativity so Digital Architecture and Design was a natural career path for me. I was hired right out of art school and was quickly absorbed into agency life. During that time, I had much success, but after about a decade, I realized that the larger the company grew and the higher up the ranks I climbed, the more removed I was from the client, the problem, and the creativity.

So I started Counterspace to reinvent the agency relationship with clients. We have maintained a boutique approach for the past 16 years ensuring the client’s goals are always at the forefront of every project.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Digital solutions. Clients seek us out to bring their digital ideas to reality. We Architect, Design, and Develop digital products, from the most simple website to highly complex digital innovations.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

As a digital agency, we don’t have an overwhelming need for many physical products or services, but when we do, we really enjoy supporting small and local businesses whenever possible. One of our favorite gifts to send our valued clients is a Cheesemonger Gift Box from the Greenwich Cheese Co. - it’s always a hit!

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

We reimagine our business all the time. Technology changes at an extremely rapid rate, and we pride ourselves on staying up to date so we can deliver best in breed solutions to our clients. This means we have to constantly reimagine our business model, including process, product, and pricing. It’s hard work, but change is necessary in business in order to stay relevant and on top of your game.

Brett would like to nominate Serendipity Magazine and Greenwich Historical Society to be featured next!
