Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT EHFagan Studio!

Three questions with Ellen Hackl Fagan, founder of EHFagan Studio.

Why did you start your business?

I have always been an artist who enjoys curating other artists' works into conceptual exhibitions. This interest in curation has evolved into opening ODETTA, a contemporary fine art gallery in 2014. Since opening in the Bushwick neighborhood in Brooklyn, I have moved the gallery 3 times, closed the brick and mortar space last October due to COVID, and have moved it into an online space and operate as a guest curator in others' gallery spaces.

ODETTA gallery has presented over 70 exhibitions, both in physical space, and virtual since 2014, and has received numerous reviews and commissions. Additionally, my own artwork has received wider attention, which has resulted in steady exhibition practice and larger commissions and sales for my paintings.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Innovative original works of contemporary and conceptual art, accessing over 250 artists worldwide, including my own painting and sculpture.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

Definitely. I felt that it was time to make a significant change in my presentation of works of art, and the pandemic forced that into being. Now virtual, I can offer an expanded program of artists and artworks and have moved the gallery into ODETTA Digital and ODETTA Petite. Now, I am no longer bound to a 12-month calendar or a single physical location.

Ellen would like to nominate Kendra Mascioli Landscape Architecture to be featured next!
