Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT MARE Design!

Three questions with Christin Engh, founder of MARE Design.

Tell me about how MARE Design began

Born and raised in Norway, Christin Engh of Mare Design has always had an affinity for interior design that was further developed as she drew inspiration from living and traveling all over the world. After raising her three daughters in Greenwich, Christin found that she was busy helping friends re-design their homes.

Mare Design began organically as Christin grew a loyal clientele that appreciated her excellent project management skills that ensured a fun and stress-free experience. In the past five years, Mare Design has earned critical acclaim with awards such as the Design Market Digest and Innovation in Design Award, as well as numerous press features including the cover of NEXT magazine.

How many local businesses does MARE Design use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

The interior design community in Fairfield County is very friendly and supportive. As a member of the ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and HBRA (Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Fairfield County), Christin is very focused on giving back to the community and supporting local businesses. Here are some of the many wonderful businesses in the area that Mare Design supports:

- Trovare Home for furniture, art, decorative items for that all-important finishing touch

- Palace Rug in Wilton for all things carpet

- McArdles for plants, pots, flowers

- Bungalow Decor in Westport for furniture, coffee table books, and decorative items

- Habitat Cos Cob for furniture, art, decorative items

- Bender Norwalk is the go-to plumbing supply for kitchen and bath

- Circa Norwalk is the destination for all things light

- Chloe Winston Norwalk is another stellar resource for lighting

- Fairfield Antique Center Norwalk has one-of-a-kind furniture and accessories that bring a curated look to the home

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

In this post-covid world where home is more important than ever, Christin has found that her Norwegian upbringing and connection to that country have influenced her design choices even more. With a long dark winter, Scandinavians have always been very good at creating cozy sanctuary spaces in the home and that is something that everyone really needs right now.

Christin loves to design fresh white backdrops for furnishings, as it brings a sense of peace and calms to a space that truly impacts our everyday lives. It is also so important to have luxurious, soft fabrics that make you feel cozy and cared for.

Mare Design projects have more soft velvets than ever before. Christin appreciates that her clients are on the same page in understanding the value of a beautifully designed home to elevate the everyday.

Christin and Mare Design would like to nominate Trovare Home, McArdles, and Habitat Cos Cob to be featured next!
