Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT, Moses Grace!

Four questions with Laura Helene Stucki, founder of Moses Grace.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business to bring women authentic luxury footwear. Women have been marketed “luxury” shoes for a very long time and programmed to believe that what they are buying is luxury. But “luxury” doesn’t necessarily mean well-made and luxury doesn’t mean an item is exclusive anymore. It is a word that has been taken for granted and used on all levels of make.

I wanted to ensure through my experiences and knowledge that a woman receives a truly luxuriously made shoe for that same premium price, not from the Far East but in a small family factory in Italy with a passed down legacy of a hundred years and more.

What is your best-selling product/service?

I can’t tell you what our favorite product is; our first line was never really launched due to Covid shutdowns but people tended toward a black pump. Our service is personal and strategic. Our clients want a shoe that few in their community have.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I have used Alpha Graphics, Greenwich, and McArdles Florist and hosted last year at the JHouse. I work mostly with other businesses in Italy however.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

I have somewhat reimagined my business. At first, I wanted to sell to every high-earning and discerning individual; now, I am going discreetly by word of mouth, somewhat like a concierge. I won’t even sell through my website and only through a private email to me.

Laura would like to nominate McArdles in Greenwich, Alpha Graphics and The Drawing Room in Cos Cob to be featured next!
