Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Britt & Co. Bagels!

Four questions with Britt Zavala, founder of Britt & Co. Bagels.

Why did you start your business?

Britt & Co Bagels was a dream of mine since childhood that came to life entirely unexpectedly and unplanned.

I began making my fresh specialty bagels and spreads as care packages accompanied with handwritten notes of thanks and encouragement for essential and frontline workers at the start of and throughout the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Word spread and the interest and demand spread from my local community and beyond and the next thing I knew what started as a good deed evolved into a lifelong dream come true.

What is your best-selling product/service?

That’s a tough one! Of course the classics but from my specialty bagels, it’s a tie between my Baby Yoda Bagels and my Cinnamon Roll Bagels with cream cheese Icing. From my Secret Menu bagel Bombs, it’s The Bacon Egg & Cheese Bagel Bomb and The For The Love of Nutella Bagel Bomb.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Our coffee and coffee products are exclusively from a local coffee company based in port Chester NY that donates 50% of its proceeds to addiction & recovery resources called Brainwashed Coffee Company. Our tap & bottled kombuchas are from Cross Culture Kombucha whose tap house and brewery are located in Danbury CT.

Our line of hot sauces is made and manufactured by Captain Cooks Food run by a local chef that specializes in custom hot sauces, spices, preserves, and more. And any equipment or appliances in need of service is always done by a local professional or service company.

Have you reimagined your small business?

I have, it started with a concept as a food truck well over a decade ago that would eventually have retail locations with some added features we still intend and hope to execute in the future. Through covid, I was always asked when I’d open retail but ultimately made a choice to keep it as strictly made-to-order. I felt it would always ensure that one on one customer service experience, the utmost quality and exceptional experience and service, and of course a lower overall overhead not only has the demand never let up but more importantly it wasn’t my full dream.

The sense of community and connection was missing. I reimagined the local bagel shop that does more than just bagels but took it a step further to merge my love of Boba tea and beverages which is how our in-shop Boba Bar came to be. Instead of just teaming up with local businesses at pop-ups I could sustainably support them on an even greater level by exclusively offering them in the shop. Making it a true local, for the love of the craft place where everyone knows your name.

Here we see you as our neighbor above being our customer. It’s a grassroots business with a grassroots mission of sharing our passion for our community, creating and delivering delicious and inspiring food while sharing in mutual time, care, respect, and appreciation for what matters, which is one another.
