In this photo, Greenwich Police Captain Gray presents Divisional Letters of Recognition to MPO Rivera, P/O Izzo, and P/O Koppelman for saving the life of a patient who had overdosed on fentanyl.
The officers were dispatched on a medical call and quickly recognized the signs and symptoms of a possible opioid overdose. They immediately administered Narcan to start reversing the effects of the narcotic. Greenwich Emergency Medical Service (GEMS) would administer six more doses before fully reversing the effects.
This incident is a reminder that Greenwich is not immune to the Opioid Addiction crisis in America. In 2017 there were 955 opioid overdose deaths in Connecticut-a rate of 27.7 deaths per 100,000 people.
