Ekagrata

Eka-what?

Ekagrata.  It’s a Sanskrit word meaning “one single point of focus” and I learned the word and it’s meaning when my yoga teacher, Miriam Zernis, told me of an incident that happened to her during a trip to India.

Miriam and her friends were in a cab being driven down a main street which was populated by people walking, riding bikes, driving rickshaws, hawking wares; as well as dogs, chickens and other assorted animals travelling the same route as her cab.  They were on the sides of the road, in the middle of the road and generally swarming all over the place – so much so that Miriam and her friends found everything a distraction: making it impossible to focus on any one particular item outside of their cab.  I suspect their heads were swimming - just ours would be in the midst of such chaos.
