Friday Flix: More January Box Office Bombs

Let’s be honest, January is notorious for screening terrible films. This month already, “Gangster Squad,” “Broken City,” and “A Haunted House” debuted. That says it all. And there hasn’t been a big score this month besides the mere $34 plus million that “Mama” made so far.

I’m sorry to say, there isn’t much going on this weekend either unless you’re into this Jeremy Renner career mistake, “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” or Jason Statham in “Parker.”

Statham, I could understand him making a bad, all too familiar film about a double crossed thief seeking revenge. We’ve essentially seen him play the same part in virtually every movie he’s been in, but Renner had an epic 2012 with “Bourne,” “MI:4,” and “The Avengers,” and now he’s starring in a different take on a fairy tale, playing Hansel and hunting witches.

Verdict: Skip both. Just find something good to rent. Or better yet, go see one of the movies that will actually win an award like “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “The Hobbit,” or “Django Unchained.”

It’s a good time for a “catch up to good movies” weekend.
