"Modern-Asian" Bambu wins on all three counts

Has the corner on: happy hour, sushi and family parties

The looming, large Oriental building, known for years as Kubuki, a Japanese restaurant, sat empty for almost a year after closing its doors in early 2010. At the same time, a former employee, Ayman Hawli and his brother, Eli Hawli, were opening 189 Sports Café in Brookfield.

Once they realized they had what it takes to succeed in the risky restaurant business, they took another chance, leased the old building, revitalized and transformed it; reflecting 19th century architecture with modern lighting and tall, soft, white-leather chairs for dining amidst rock-faced walls. A room full of Hibachi table stoves were also added.

Now, not only is Japanese food served, but modern Asian fare includes Chinese and Thai. Charred Filet of Beef with mushroom ragout and wasabi sweet potatoes are one of the more Americanized favorites. A Sake O'tini, made with Bacardi Orange, sake and cranbury juice before-hand fits the bill.

Another restaurant, Market Place Restaurant and Kitchen was opened the following year; also a winner with local diners.

When asked what contributed to the success of not just one, but all three restaurants, Ayman answered simply, "Research."

"We did a lot of research by asking people what they wanted and listened. Plus we're 'foodies'. We love to eat so we visited other successful restaurants and learned."

And learn they did. Bambu is now the only bar on Mill Plain offering Happy Hour. The others knew they couldn't compete, especially with the extravagant sushi specials. That's one good count.

Secondly, they have been catering lunches to businesses such as Cartus on Wednesdays with a fresh Sushi Bar, thanks to Chef Hiroshi, well-known for his creative, food artistry among sushi lovers in Fairfield County.

"We were told the employees complained very loudly when they didn't have it one week," laughed Ayman.

Third, families love the entertaining Hibachi chefs, and often return with larger groups to the tables which seat 8 to 10. If the groups get too large, they can rent the whole room or the adjacent dining room for a total of 100 guests. Some wedding parties have taken over the entire facility with 150 guests.

Rehearsal dinners and after-wedding reception parties often take place since out-of –town guests can stay at the Maron Hotel, directly across the street.
