Block printing is a traditional method used for printing fabric and paper. Printing materials with wooden blocks were and still is popular in many parts of Asia. Dutch merchants brought block printed fabric from Asia to Western Europe in the 16th century. In Russia, that culturally and politically had many ties to Asia, and block printing was known and widely practiced for decorating frocks, head scarves, and other fabric items until 18th-19th century (the first examples of wooden block prints found in Russia date back to the 10th century).
Karin will walk you through the basics of making simple patterns for designing your own T-Shirt through Block Printing. Each unique block creates an individual design pattern. Every participant will take away from this workshop their own personal and uniquely Block Printed T-Shirt to keep for yourself or to gift to a friend.
Karin Mansberg is a self-taught fabric designer. After the graduation from the Western Connecticut State University’s MFA Illustration program in 2013, she started designing hand printed fabric under the label BLOCKprintedArt. Karin likes to design tote bags, scarves, and home accessories with her hand printed fabric. She often uses up-cycled denim and other materials such as zippers, cords, and buttons. Besides designing fabric she also likes to make relief prints and illustrate stories. Her prints and drawings explore connections between observed, remembered, and imagined. She prints on fabric and paper, alternating controlled, designed marks with spontaneous processes of such as monotype, collage, and drawing with a blindly picked selection of pencils. She studied Art History and Criticism in the Estonian Academy of Art in Tallinn, Estonia (1996-99), which was a time she indulged in the theoretical understanding of art. However, she has realized she enjoys hands-on experiences in art and likes teaching block printing to both children and adults.
