Eastern Student Philecia Seipio of Danbury Serves Community as CCE Student Leader

A number of civic-minded students from Eastern Connecticut State University are serving thousands of hours in the community this fall semester as student leaders with Eastern's Center for Community Engagement (CCE). A student leader is an experienced student volunteer who has been hired and trained by the CCE to recruit, train and manage volunteers, serve as a liaison with community partners, and plan and run service programs.

Among the student leaders is Philecia Seipio '20 of Danbury, who majors in Biology and Mathematics. Seipio volunteers with Barrows STEM Academy After School Program, Bridges to the Future and Windham Center After School Program.

Student leaders attend weekly community programs with their volunteers, as well as assist with volunteer recruitment and management for one-time special events. CCE Director Kim Silcox notes that student leaders are an integral part of the CCE staff.

The CCE works with more than 35 area partner organizations and schools, providing volunteers with collaborative learning opportunities and personal growth through community service. Last year, students at Eastern contributed over 23,000 hours totaling $573,000 in services to the local community.
