Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

Meet Michelle Cammarota-Smith, owner of The BookSmiths Shoppe.

Why did you start your business?

The BookSmiths shop is Danbury’s only independent bookstore, catering to the Ridgebury and surrounding communities. As part of the Connecticut book trail, we provide a place to shop for new and used books while offering fun sidelines and gifts usually not found elsewhere. We keep used books out of landfills and offer discounts to match Amazon’s monopoly on the book selling market.

What is your best-selling product/service?

We host book signings that cater to local authors who do not have the opportunity to showcase and promote their work at larger and more prestigious bookstores. We donate to local nonprofits and provide a welcome respite for the hundreds of people working at The Summit at Danbury.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Our bookstore supports The Friends of the Danbury Library (we have a book donation center at the store). We purchased dog towels for Roar of Ridgefield. We hosted a book signing and gave the proceeds to Ann’s Place. Last year, any book sales for It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover were donated to The Center for Empowerment and Education in Danbury because the book focused on Domestic Violence.

Have you reimagined your small business?

We’ve recently expanded our bookstore to offer complimentary coffee and tea, added many new titles to our collection and won the James Patterson Holiday Bonus award in 2023. Furthermore, we were recently featured on WNPR’s Connecticut Public Radio discussing Inclusive Romance reads. Collectively, these efforts have allowed our bookstore to positively impact local readers, authors, and the literary community as a whole.
