WCSU students volunteer throughout the region

Some 800 student and faculty volunteers from Western Connecticut State University helped more than 40 not-for-profit organizations in and around Danbury as part of the WCSU annual Day of Service.

From clearing trails at a local horse farm to painting stairwells, sorting through donated clothes, cleaning, pulling weeds or washing fire trucks and ambulances, there was something worthwhile to do everywhere.

Volunteers began the day on Sept. 20 with a continental breakfast and a free T-shirt, followed by a pep talk by WCSU President Dr. John B. Clark. After a group photo in front of Fairfield Hall, they dispersed across the region for three hours of service.

This was the sixth year that Dean of Students Dr. Walter Cramer organized the Day of Service, and it was the largest number of volunteers ever.

The volunteer activities included yard work, painting, moving boxes, tagging books, working with animals and picking up trash. The nonprofits represented a broad spectrum of the community, from fire departments, to libraries, retirement homes, museums, and community centers.
