Housatonic Habitat Breaks Ground On Two New Homes in New Preston

Housatonic Habitat for Humanity is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for two new homes they are building in the Myfield Lane development of New Preston on Tuesday, November 15th at 2 pm. The homes are expected to be completed by the summer 2023.

The home build is being made possible by generous support from Joanne & John Patrick, Liz & Steven Goldstone and Bedoukian Research.

“It’s always exciting to start creating a new’ forever’ home for a family,” says Peter Arcoma, Housatonic Habitat’s construction manager. “We have a great group of construction volunteers who will help to complete both of these homes.” Local businesses are also stepping up to help on the project, and Arcoma stresses that they are always eager to work with more community partners.

The Habitat homeowners purchasing these two new homes will also be assisting with the building process. “Our homeowners are required to put in 250 hours of ‘sweat equity’ prior to purchasing their homes,” explains Housatonic Habitat Executive Director Diana Arfine. “The families work alongside the volunteers in building their own homes.” The homeowners are also required to take financial literacy education courses, providing them with tools they need to be successful and responsible homeowners. They are taught tips on everything from credit repair to budgeting to estate planning. “Our volunteer financial advisors offer ongoing one-on-one mentoring even after the homes have been purchased,” says Arfine..

Volunteers interested in helping with this upcoming build can email our volunteer coordinator Marje at volunteer@housatonichabitat.org or head to our website to sign up. Local businesses interested in supporting the build, either by providing supplies or offering professional services, can email construction manager Peter Arcoma at: peter@housatonichabitat.org.

Construction on these two new Habitat New Preston homes will begin this fall.
